Chevrolet Silverado 2022 vs. A Ford F-150 truck

A particularly popular segment for workers and travelers, full-size pickups are going head-to-head, offering ever more amenities, capabilities, and luxury.

See how the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2022 Ford F-150 compare in performance, design and upcoming electric models.

Powerful Engines

Full-size pickup trucks are known for offering a wide range of configurations and engines. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers 4 different ones, just like the Ford F-150:

Chevrolet Silverado

Ford F-150

Engine

Power/Torque

Engine

Power/Torque

2,7 L Turbo

310 horsepower/
430 lb-ft

3,3 L V6

5,3 L V8

383 lb-ft

2,7 L V6

6,2 L V8

3,5 L V6

500 lb-ft

3,0 L Turbodiesel

277 horsepower/
460 lb-ft

3,5 L V6 hybrid

430 horsepower/
570 lb-ft

What stands out from the comparison is first of all that the entry-level engine is considerably more powerful on the Chevrolet Silverado’s side, as well as for the following versions. One notable difference is that the F-150 offers a hybrid engine, while Chevrolet relies more on a diesel engine.

However, this version displays the Ford F-150 towing capacity of 12,700 lbs, while the Chevrolet diesel can pull loads of 13,300 lbs. Also, while it’s true that hybrid technology suggests both more power and less fuel consumption, we can’t say that Ford’s technology can be called a success:

“The low progressiveness of the brake pedal was reminiscent of the days
of the first hybrid vehicles on the market.”
Éric LeFrançois, L’Annuel de l’automobile

Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Off-Road Versions

For 2022, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is adding an off-road variant to its lineup, called the ZR2. The ZR2 can be compared to Ford’s Tremor, as both offer common features like 33-inch off-road tires and off-road shocks.

The Silverado adds additional features like:

  • New steel bumpers
  • Multimatic DSSV shocks
  • Front bumpers that allow a 31-degree approach angle
  • Large underbody skid plates

It offers an exceptional off-road driving experience that is safe for the vehicle. In Ford’s lineup, there is a vehicle that is more off-road oriented than the Tremor, but at a much higher cost: The Raptor with a starting price of $90,330. The Chevrolet ZR2 is an excellent alternative with a starting price of less than $80,000.

Chevrolet’s Improved Design

Critics of the Silverado often pointed to its less comfortable and less luxurious interior than Ford’s. This year, the car manufacture remedies the situation and even surpasses its rivals with an available 13.4-inch touch screen! For comparison, Ford’s is 12 inches.

Both include a full infotainment system, with Apple and Android smartphone compatibility. Chevrolet’s new truck takes technology a step further by adding a semi-autonomous driving system, Super Cruise!

As for the overall quality of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado’s interior:

“We have a tangle of lines and textures, and especially more elegant materials, particularly in the High Country version which offers open-pore wood trim and stainless steel elements.”
Samuel Lessard, RPM

Consequently, it becomes a fiercer competitor to the F-150 with an equally refined interior. Also, keep in mind that the exterior has also been reworked for more elegance in addition to the classic robustness of the truck.

Chevrolet Silverado EV: Upcoming Electric Versions

While the Silverado doesn’t offer a hybrid variant, it counts on something more important: a future electric model, which Ford is also offering. As we approach this electrified future in the truck segment, however, it’s interesting to compare the announced numbers:

F-150 Lightning

Silverado EV

Autonomy

370 km

483 km (option)

640 km

Power/Torque

426 horsepower

563 horsepower/775 lb-ft

510 horsepower/615 lb-ft

660 horsepower/780 lb-ft

The Ford-F-150 Electric’s autonomy range and even its power are less attractive than those of the Chevrolet truck.
